This Napanee, Ontario, native was born on September 27, 1984. Avril Lavigne began singing at an early age, at festivals, country music fairs and talent contests. By her early teens, she was already writing songs and playing guitar. Luck caught up with her on a trip to New York City, where she was noticed by Antonio "LA" Reid who got the young artist a contract with Arista Records.
The time was quite stressful for her. Despite of hard efforts her creativity didn’t show on the paper. As Avril admits, the songs didn’t represent me. It was then that she took a flight to Los Angeles and met producer cum songwriter Clif Magness. The chemistry between them worked and the songs for her first debut album, ‘Let Go’, began pouring out. Soon after Avril hooked up with Nettwerk Management who've steered the careers of Sarah McLachlan, Dido, Coldplay, Barenaked Ladies and Sum 41. Finally, she hit big in summer 2002 with her fun debut song "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi” (a real life narrative), when she was just seventeen.
Fourteen million albums and eight Grammy nominations later, the Canadian singer teamed with Butch Walker of the Marvelous 3, Raine Maida and Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Good Charlotte) to produce Lavigne's second album. ‘Under My Skin’ appeared in May 2004 and kissed success when it was declared No.1 at the US charts. The album opens with the dramatic tracks "Take Me Away" and "Together," which are string-infected scores followed by "Don't Tell Me," a song of willful female empowerment. It also contains certain moody tracks ("Forgotten," "Nobody's Home") that reveal a darker side of Avril Lavigne. The album is nothing near her debut album, and clearly reflects the progress Avril has made in two years. Some of the songs have been co-written by Avril and fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, and most have been recorded in Raine's studio.
A middle child who "always wanted to be the center of attention," Avril was bound to bust out of Napanee. "I'm gonna dress what's me, I'm gonna act what's me and I'm gonna sing what's me.": this is what this wild child is all about.
