Nelly is one of R&B’s premier acts currently enjoying extensive chart success. Originally from the mid-west, Nelly (b. Cornell Haynes Jr, St. Louis, MI) finds influences from both rap and pop, bringing him extensive chart success. Growing up in the suburbs of St. Louis brings a stable environment where Haynes starts a collective with some friends. The group produces a single ‘Gimme What You Got’ which becomes a local hit. Record company interest fails to materialise though and Nelly goes out on his own with mutual consent.
In 2000 Universal releases the Nelly debut album ‘Country Grammer’ which fails to make a direct impact on the charts. He returns to his St. Louis collective and attempts to bring his friends to a similar career as his own. For his own solo follow up Nelly employs the successful producers duo the Neptunes who bring the hitsingle ‘Hot in Here’. The album Nellyville manages to cross over into the mainstream, clearly playing to pop sensibilities. A remix album follows as well as a contributions to the Bad Boys II soundtrack. Haynes himself steps in front of the camera in a remake of ‘The Longest Yard’ with Chris Rock and Adam Sandler. In 2004 the 2-set Sweat/Suit is released which brings the global smash ‘My Place’. The albums sees an unlikely collaboration with country star Tim McGraw while Snoop Dogg and Christina Aguilera also contribute. Sweat focussing on rhythm driven tracks while Suit focuses on sweet flavoured R&B. Again produced mainly by the Neptunes the album set is an overnight success. At the end of the year Haynes personal life becomes more of a focus as there are numerous rumours over a possibly relationship with R&B diva Ashanti which are confirmed as the two step out at the 2005 Grammy Awards.
